The word “play” has at least three uses. The first is as a verb, with no object. The lack of an object is fitting, because this sense of the word is that we do something just for fun, for no other reason at all. The second is as a verb with an object. We play a character. We play a game. We play an instrument. Finally, as a noun, a play is a dramatic composition or performance.
